Somethings Working…

Nothing starts my weekend off the right way better than a good weigh in:

Starting Weight: 282.8 Pounds

Last Week’s Weight: 256.8 (which I just realized looking back at last week’s post I recorded 264.8 which was a few pounds off, and thank goodness that wasn’t true!)

This Week’s Weight: 252.2

Total Week’s Loss: -4.6 Pounds!

Total Loss: 30. 4 Pounds

What worked this week:

  • Continued with my 90 day no caffeine rule (I have since turned it into a no carbonation at all rule).  I don’t think I realized how badly an effect caffeine and soda (even diet soda) were having on my body.  I’m not going to lie, I truly believe I have been seeing such great losses these last couple of weeks because I have 100% cut it out.
  • I continued to eat a 90% Plant based diet.  And I have a secret arsenal that I will blog about later that has helped me kick chicken stock (something I’ve been having a hard time letting go of).
  • I have been doing some form of exercise everyday even if it is cleaning (which I did for 5 hours on Monday, and that burned some major calories).
  • My hub’s was eating healthy as well.  It is so much easier to eat healthy when your significant other is on the bandwagon with you!  I cannot stress this enough and besides the whole caffeine thing having my hub’s really trying at being healthy helped me out enormously!
  • I tried some new recipes.  Healthy eating is always more fun when you are trying different things.  I even measured out a vegetable dip that I made today and I will share the recipe with you all next week.  Getting creative in the kitchen is so much fun, and cathartic if you ask me.

What a great way to start off a weekend!  The hub’s and I are going to the big city to do food shopping tonight and I mentioned going out to dinner.  He told me he does not want to sabotage his weigh in on Monday, and I could not have been more pleased with that response.

Have a great weekend everyone!

He’s All Mine (Muwahahaha)

Imagine me rubbing my hands evilly while reading that title.

Let it be known that nagging works.

People may hate it when the nagging begins, but it proves they will do almost anything to get it to stop.

Take my own life’s experience.  Nag your husband long enough to get on the healthy bandwagon and it is inevitable that he will eventually get sick of your nagging and cave.  Especially when you tell him that it would help you out on your own weight loss journey (not that I haven’t used this argument before, but apparently something I said stuck.  Now only if I could remember what it was?).

This week Dustin is mine.  He’s actually legally mine by marriage, but this time I have complete control over everything that goes into his body.  Food wise anyway.

We’ve decided to try a little experiment to see how my diet affects his diet.  He will be eating (mostly) the same kind of things I eat, and he will be going to the gym a minimum of 5 times this week.

He weighed in this morning at 226.  We had a weekend of semi-indulgence (we weren’t as bad as we normally are on the weekends) so I’m sure some of his weight loss is water weight.  But the whole point is that I’m hoping he will be able to feel a difference, and in turn it will help him and also help me.  We have already fully admitted that we are enablers and this week we will be playing different roles in each others food lives.  I’m pretty excited!  And I’m not letting the fact that he’s giving me a pouty face while eating raw carrots at lunch, dampen my spirit.

When I ask him what he’s going to have for breakfast he says “I don’t know?  What do YOU want me to eat for breakfast?”.   I then made him a chocolate, banana, peanut butter protein shake (under 400 calories).  I was trying to ease him in with something delicious, and to please his pallet I made it sans kale.

But there will be kale this week.  Oh so much kale.

Watch out Dustin.  You may like a healthy lifestyle yet.

DRINK THE DAMN SMOOTHIE!

Sweat It Out:
50 Minute hilly walk
foam rolling and lots of stretching!

If it is one thing I can attest to from my weight loss journey thus far is this: Tastes change.  The first time I ate oatmeal I didn’t chew it, but more let it slide down my throat.  When I started eating meatless meals they always felt like they were lacking something.  When I started putting spinach and kale in my smoothies they looked, well, green and gross.

Now I crave oatmeal in the morning (had it for breakfast today!), I love preparing meatless meals and the unlimited options it feels like it brings, and I make it a game to see just how GREEN I can get my daily smoothie.

As far as Hanna is concerned she LOVES green smoothies.  So much in fact, lately she has been guzzling down an entire 16 oz. all by herself!  The daily smoothie is great for her because she is teeny tiny, and every time I take her to the pediatrician she is in the 5th percentile for weight.  Her weight hasn’t changed in her last 4 appointments.  She is a busy kid and she hates to stop to eat so a smoothie is a great on the go way for her to gain some weight.  I get to make her the smoothies I wish I could make for myself with nut butters and chocolate almond milk.  The one thing that makes the fat difference is that I add Dr. Udo’s Flax oil.  It gives her 14 grams of fat and another 120 calories.  I can’t wait to see if she has gained at her next appointment.

But I digress.

I have been fighting a battle this week.  I’m on the motivation train right now since I am trying to get back on track after what seemed like a LONG 3 weeks OFF track.  Someone else has actually showed interest in coming along for the ride.  Who has two thumbs and HATES green smoothies?

THIS GUY!

(this is actually one of his annual birthday photo’s that he sends to the first person in my family who texts him happy birthday)

Dustin’s “nervous weight”, as he puts it, is 227 pounds.  This week, he got there.  He now has a little motivation to get down to a more acceptable weight and he would like me to help him.  The only problem is that Dustin’s way of “being healthy” is to only eat one meal a day.  I’m trying to get him to eat breakfast before he leaves for work and I’m also trying to get him to eat more fruits and vegetables.

What is the easiest way for me to make these changes for him?  Kill two birds with one stone and introduce the green smoothie.  I have made him this drink the last two days and here is the reaction I have gotten:

Him: “does it have to be so thick?”

Me: “I made it with banana’s so it would be smooth.”

Him: ” Why do you have to add kale?”

Me: “For calcium, iron, and cancer fighting nutrients.  You work in the Gas and Oil industry and around chemicals it’s almost certain that you will get cancer at some point.  This will help your chances”

Him: “I have to drink ALL of this?!” (while his daughter is BEGGING him for a taste)

Me: “You can sit down and eat well over 2000 calories in one sitting and you are turning your nose up at something that is actually healthy for you?”

Him:”Why is it so frothy?”

Me: “Use a straw.”

Him: “A straw won’t change it.” (I hand him a straw, he laughs as drinking through the straw, once again realizing I am almost always right)

I could go on and on (because that is just what he did), but instead I choose to relish in the fact that some F&V’s made it into his system 2 days in row.  Besides that, in the end all it took was a simple phrase:

“DRINK THE DAMN SMOOTHIE!”

A Loss and a Gain

‎”Things don’t go wrong and break your heart so you can become bitter and give up. They happen to break you down and build you up so you can be all that you were intended to be.”

Thank you again Livestrong.com for another inspiring Facebook status!  I sure needed it after the past week.

In the wee hours of the early morning on Wednesday, Dustin, Hanna, and I set off for Las Vegas after getting news that Dustin’s Grandmother had a stroke. My husband has been truly blessed in his life, and although I do not feel it is my place to give out information about his past, I have to say that his family is amazing.  In high school the Larsen/Beighley clan started feeding my husband, and ended up not being able to get rid of him.  I call his family Dustin’s “surrogate” family, but to Dustin they are thicker than blood.  So when his granny went to the hospital from pneumonia this past week, it was not a hard decision that we needed to be with the family.

After many twists and turns throughout this week Granny decided it was her time to go this morning.  She (along with every. single. member of the Larsen/ Beighley Family) was one of the most selfless people I was blessed to know.  She gave service to anyone who needed it and always put others before herself.  I celebrate the life that she lived, and also the work in the after life that she will be doing.  I am so blessed to know that there is a heaven above and a Heavenly Father waiting with open arms.  I will miss you Granny, and I can’t wait until the time that we will meet again!

And in regards to the “gain” portion that I mentioned in the title….

In stressful times I eat.  You can tell how stressed I am by the amount of food that I eat.  This week started out great, and by Tuesday  I was down 3 pounds ready to win this weeks weigh in for Monica’s Birthday Challenge, and then the week started to go South quickly.  As soon as I knew we were going to be traveling I started to crave food.  Spending time in a hospital made me crave food.  Being in a place that had thousands of options to choose from made me crave food.

So what did I do?  I ate.  I ate my feelings.  I ate my sadness.  I ate my frustrations with eating too much by eating more.

And then I had a little break down, and a pity party for myself.

Then I put on my big girl panties and I weighed myself. If you do the crime, you do the time, and I needed to see the number that was going to show up:

That my friends is a 13 pound gain since the beginning of February.  Wait.  Wasn’t my goal to lose 5 pounds a month?  Hmmm.  I seem to be going the opposite direction.

I tried to tell myself it’s because I have only pooped twice in the last 5 days (going out of town in hard on my digestive track), or that I have a lot of water retention and salt hanging around in my system.  While all of these things are true, and the weight loss will come quickly with those first few pounds once I get back on a healthy track, it is still a gain.  It is still a step backward, and it is still frustrating.  My first thought is that I have to come up with a plan of action, but the plan is simple and needs no long thought process. Track food.  Exercise.  Drink Water.  Sleep 7-8 hours.  Repeat.

Trying Something Different…

Sweat it Out:
45 Minute Spin Class

Spin class has redeemed itself!  It could have been that I pushed myself today, or that I went with a friend, but whatever it was, I liked what I experienced!  I had a good sweat and now I am ready to get my day going!

Today is my fantabulous hubs’ BIRTHDAY!!!  It has become a tradition that whoever wishes Dustin Happy Birthday first gets sent a picture similar to this one:

I’m too lazy to download the one he sent out to our SIL, Millissa.  I think this is the 3rd year in a row that she has gotten the picture.  Maybe next year there will be a prize!?

We are all set for a fun filled day!  We have a babysitter coming tonight and we are going to paint the town red (does anyone even say that anymore?).

Confession:  I am going to have chicken for dinner tonight (gasp!).  I am 2 days away from completing the 21-day Vegan Kickstart Challenge and I feel that honesty is the best policy.  Dustin has requested that we use the Texas Roadhouse coupon that he got in his email, and it’s his birthday, so I let him pick!  I have already looked over their menu and have decided that I will get the grilled chicken breast with a sweet potato (not loaded, plain), and fresh vegetables.  My final decision (and reasoning behind it) will come on my final check in on Monday.

The theme is baby steps. I have learned so much through this last 3 weeks, but one of the biggest things I learned is that if I jump right in without testing the water first, I am more likely to fail. These last 3 weeks I have been testing the waters, and I’m excited to share my final thoughts with you all next week!

Some fun things from this week, just in case you missed them:

Tell me something that happened to you this last week!

Syncing Up

Sweat it Out:
Weights 30 Minutes
Elliptical 45 Minutes

Yesterday was the first day since I bought my Bodybugg in October that I actually synced my calories burned with my calories consumed.  I had a great day yesterday, and the scale is showing some results.

I can testify to food journaling and why it needs to be done.  My track record in the past was that I stayed on track with calories most of the day until I hit dinner.  Dinner is usually when I have meat products and eat the bulk of my food.  For example, on Wednesday I made chicken fajitas and my total calories consumed during dinner were 827 calories.  That is with using healthy alternatives!

Last night I made a Butternut Squash soup and steamed broccoli, and had strawberries and 2 cuties for dessert.  The total calories consumed for last nights dinner were 483.  Quite a difference, and I felt like I ate a LOT!

I ended up eating a total of 1547 calories yesterday, which is actually lower than I would have liked, but I felt like I was eating ALL DAY!  It just shows how much you can eat when you are filling up on healthy foods.  Here is how the day ended according to Bodybugg:

I ended with a deficit of 1757 calories!  I am shooting for more like 1800 calories a day, because this morning when I woke up I felt fatigued like I didn’t eat enough yesterday, but I keep it to 1800 calories a day and continue burning like I have been, there should be some serious results in the future.

One more success is that I made a butternut squash soup that my hub’s liked so much, he finished of the ENTIRE pot!  I was planning on having some left over for lunch today, but…..oh well.

Butternut Squash Soup
1 small onion chopped
2 celery stalks chopped
handful of baby carrots chopped
2 medium red potatoes cubed
medium butternut squash cubed
32 oz. water
6 Chicken Bouillon cubes

Combine butter, onion, celery, carrots, red potatoes, and butternut squash into pot and cook for about 10 minutes stirring occasionally.  Add water and chicken bouillon cubes and simmer for 40 minutes.

Once vegetables are soft, transfer to blender and blend on high until smooth.  Transfer back to pot and add salt and pepper to desired taste.  I added a lot of pepper because I like it spicy!  I also think that you could experiment with other things like adding curry or other spices, if you like that sort of thing.

My husband will eat anything once, so I have to ask him if he would eat it again, and he reluctantly admitted that he LOVED this soup.  I think it is because it is healthy and low-calorie that it is hard for him to admit that he like it.  I will be working this soup into the meal rotation.

And here are the nutritional stat’s:

Are you a picky eater?

Weights:  I don’t know if I can really say that this workout was from NROLFW I modified it so much!  I am having a hard time with this phase because some of the moves are awkward and I can’t feel them working anything.  Normally I would just add more weight, but then my form is all off.  This has been a frustrating phase for me.  I only have two more workouts left for this phase and then I can move on.  Phase 6 is a lot different from the rest of the phases and I am eager to move on!

  • Deadlift: 4 sets of 10, 60 pounds
  • Bent over Row: 4 sets of 4, 60 pounds
  • Lat Pull down:  sets of 8, 80 pounds
  • Single leg squat: 4 sets of 8
  • Push-ups: 4 sets of 10
  • Seated row: 4 sets of 6, 80 pounds
  • Plank: 4 60 second holds

I Don’t Usually Like Weekends….

Sweat it Out:
Rollin on the River 5K Walk

I don’t usually like weekends.  It could be because while most people look at the weekend as family time, I usually spend it with Hanna, because my hub’s is a hard-working man who has had to work a LOT of weekends lately!  I do look at the extra money as a total blessing, and now that I stay home with our little munchkin we have been down an income and so the extra hours help out a LOT!

This weekend I was thankful to have the hub’s for 3 whole days!  I’m not going to lie, it has felt like a bit of a vacation, and I’ve veered off the straight and narrow eating plan for the last few days.  Dustin and I have made a promise to each other that we will have a healthy Sunday to start the week off right.  I feel like a junk gut, and I can tell a HUGE difference in my energy levels and how I feel all around.

Another fun thing that we got to participate in was the Rollin on the River 5k for the Mesa Developmental Services.  I enjoyed every minute of this event with Dustin.  My husband is competitive and even though pretty much nobody was there to win the walk, Dustin was trying to pass as many people as he could.  I think it’s just because he wanted to be first in line for the lunch that was provided.  We had a lot of fun walking and talking together, and we decided it was something that we should do together more often.  Side Note:  he has been complaining all day long about how stiff his muscles are from our workout yesterday!  I love that I made my hub’s work hard at the gym!

Here are a few pic’s from the event:

Hanna and I getting ready to do some walking!

Dustin showing some enthusiasm!

post-race, still smiling! Also, I got to walk in my new Old Navy activewear, which are SO comfortable! I can't wait to wear them to the gym on Monday!

This is my friend Kelly, who has been my workout buddy since I started doing "The New Rules of Lifting for Women". It is so fun to be able to have a friend to work out with even if it is only once a week!

We had so much fun at this event, it was great to be able to get involved and support a friend!

To top off our Saturday we got to attend our annual murder mystery party where we were all apart of the “Psycho Circus”.  I was the bearded Lady (who later revealed I was a man dressing like women), and Dustin was Sampson the “Strong Man”, complete with handle bar mustache.  I only got to wear my beard for a minute because the adhesive didn’t stick very well, but Dustin’s mustache was the bomb!  I wish I had gotten a picture (doh!).  My friend got some shots so hopefully I will be able to get a copy.  We had a fun group with 5 other couples and the acting was horrendous as always!

Now I have one last day to soak up all the time I can get with my hub’s before he has to head back to work for an undetermined amount of time.

What have you done this weekend?

Such a GREAT Day!

Sweat it Out:
Elliptical 35 minutes
Weights 45 minutes

This has been a GREAT day so I will just start from the beginning:

  • Started the day with a fabulous NROLFW weight lifting session, that my husband joined me on. Dustin has been working like crazy these last few months so when he gets a day off we try to pack as much as possible into the time we have to enjoy with each other.  My hub’s was very leery in the beginning of the workout because he thought all of the moves would be “girl exercise’s”.  I told him the tag line of the book was “lift like a MAN, look like a goddess”.  That’s right, these are MAN moves.  He was a good sport and got through the whole workout.  He said that he was even more impressed with me and my progress, now that he has gotten to do a workout with me.  He told me that his hamstrings are already sore and his abs will be feeling the burn tomorrow morning after the planks we did today!
  • After getting ready I went to my closet to find something to wear, and by chance put on a pair of jeans that I bought post-pregnancy as a motivator to start getting back in shape.  They are a size smaller than I was (at the time) and they were normally $80.  I bought them on sale for $20.  I put them on and they finally fit!  Then I tried on one of my smaller shirts that hasn’t fit in a couple of years, and it fit as well!  Holy crap!  I should have taken a picture (now I’m all comfy in my PJ’s so I’ll have to take a picture later)!
  • Old Navy is currently having a sale on all of their active wear.  I thought we should check it out since I am in dire need of new gym clothes.  I went in feeling hopeful, but defeated after holding up some of the compression pants and they didn’t seem to fit.  My husband FORCED me to take them to the dressing room.  Thinking of the disappointment I would feel after having such a fun morning, I reluctantly tried them on thinking that at least it would give me some motivation to keep going to the gym.  They slipped right on.  No, seriously, they fit, and they fit good.  I came out of the dressing room in shock and mouthed the words to my hub’s “they fit!” across the store.  I was excited, I felt good, and my husband had a look of pride for me on his face all day long.
  • This is what I’m talking about.  I am seeing the results of my hard work, and it only makes me want to work harder.  I also got some pretty cute new gym clothes that I get to wear to the “Rollin on the River 5k” tomorrow.  My foot is starting to feel a little better, so I think I will be doing an easy walk tomorrow, and I don’t plan on finishing in any set time.  I could possibly even be the last person, but I am there to support my friend and have fun with our group.
There is one other thing that I wanted to mention that I am excited about, but I think it deserves its own post so I will be giving it its own post on Sunday, but it is exciting for me and I hope you will all tune in!
What is something exciting that happened to you today?!
“The New Rules of Lifting for Women” Day 5, Phase 3, Workout A

  • Dumbell Single-leg Romanian Deadlift: 3 sets of 6, 30 pounds

  • Dumbell single arm overhead squat: 3 sets of 6, 5/15 Pounds
  • Dumbell incline Bench Press: 3 Sets of 6, 40 pounds
  • Plank: 3 sets of 60 seconds
  • Horizontal Wood Chop: 3 sets of 6, 60 pounds

Cheat Day Surprise!

Sweat it Out:
Elliptical 5 minute warm up
Weights 60 minutes

I’m not gonna lie, I took a much-needed day off from the gym yesterday which would have been a cardio workout. But don’t worry, I made up for it today by kicking my butt at the gym this morning.  Today was the last workout of Phase 2 of “The New Rules of Lifting for Women”.  I took my time and did 3 sets of every exercise to make sure that I am SORE tomorrow.  I also did my own version of a killer ab workout which included the following:

  • Prone Jack Knife 3 sets of 15
  • Reverse Crunch 3 sets of 10
  • Plank 3 60 second hold’s

I went from one ab exercise straight into the next, and by the end I was a pool of sweat and my abs were on fire!  I felt like this was one of the best weight sessions thus far. Here is what the rest of the workout looked like:

  • Deadlifts 3 sets of 10, 60 pounds
  • Bulgarian Split Squats 3 sets of 10, 25 pound plate
  • Reverse lat pulldown 3 sets of 10, 80 pounds
  • Reverse lunge of box with a front reach, 3 sets of 10, 16 pounds
  • Prone cuban snatch 3 sets of 10, 16 pounds
  • Ab circuit from above
Why did I have so much energy this morning, you ask?  Because a certain someone surprised me with getting off early from work so we could go out to dinner for our anniversary that was on Wednesday.  So it was a SURPRISE CHEAT DAY!
I think I will make my cheat day more like yesterday’s.  It was more of a Cheat Meal.  I ate and tracked all of my food and I was only at 600 calories and 17 points for the day.  It was a good thing too because we went to the FABULOUS Texas Roadhouse for steaks!  We started out our meal with a baby bloomin onion, and then I ordered a New york Strip, which was awesome!  I had the loaded baked potato, a side salad, and then Dustin and I shared a piece of cake and ice cream.
It was AMAZING.  Of course I ate myself into a food coma, and felt like crap the rest of the night.  But it was great fuel for this mornings workout!
After going through this last week eats, I think I found the culprit in my food.  CHEESE.  Which really sucks because I am pretty  much a big mouse.  So the next 6 day challenge will be to cut the cheese out, and see if it makes a difference.  I will also continue to track and post my eats at night. the challenge starts after my lunch because I ate a Subway with two triangles of cheese (woops).
What is a food that would be hard to give up?
What was your workout today?

A Day to Remember

Let’s take a little break from the daily grind to go off topic of weight loss, eating, or poop, to talk about something really special that happened 9 years ago today.  I married the love of my life and my bestest friend in the whole world!

For those of you who don’t know this amazing man, this is Dustin:

This is my D-train, honey, or poopy (yes, that is what we actually call each other).

We were engaged in June of 2002

We were married on September 28, 2002

Yes that is an 60 pound, thinner me.  And Dustin seems to be a little thinner as well.  Sometimes marriage will do that to you.

We went to Mexico on a cruise for our Honeymoon

Where all Dustin wanted was a sombrero and moracca’s

Which of course, he got.

Along with an unexpected Henna tattoo, and a white trash make over.

We were sealed for time and all eternity in the Manti Temple on October 23, 2004.

He has been by my side through good times, and the absolute crap storms of my life.  Most of which took place within the first 2 years we were together.  That’s how you know you’ve found the one.  He teaches me unconditional love, and accepting people for who they are.  But most of all he teaches me that I have self-worth and that I am a strong woman who can achieve anything I want in this world.  He supports me in all of my endeavors, and my craziness.  He knows how to handle the irrational side of me that makes me cookoo.

He truly is the corner-stone of my life.  I couldn’t imagine a better husband in my wildest dreams!

Happy 9 year anniversary poopy!  I love you more than words can say!

Now I am off to start doing research for our big 10 year next September, where there will be traveling involved.
